for those who made the "ask" for $180 billion for rental assistance -- candidly, we were hoping for that higher amount to be on the table but the committee did not include that (they increased funding for public housing repair, building more affordable housing, downpayment assistance, etc). Q: How many vaccines have been destroyed due to being perishable? A:I haven't seen a total number, just some anecdotes from countries. There are examples of countries donating vaccines very close to the expiration date only to have them expire essentially on the tarmac. One of many reasons why donations are not the main way out of this crisis (but may fill some emergency gaps)

John Fawcett
01:10:54
Q: Are drug company profits an issue here? A: Absolutely. Pharma is filling contracts the the US/Europe first because it's a higher price that COVAX and middle/low income countries pay. That said, their still making a profit at these lower prices, and many (particularly Moderna) have already taken billions in taxpayer funding to develop, test, and manufacture doses.
John Fawcett
01:12:20
Q: What has happened to the TRIPS waiver issue? Is Germany still blocking it? A: Germany is a major obstacle, yes. US is on record as supporting TRIPS waiver (yay!), but not clear how much their prioritizing this in negotiations (boo!).
John Fawcett
01:17:59
Q: i think we should look at other countries and learn from how their numbers have been so low compared to the US. it's US-centric to believe that America will "lead" the world out of the pandemic. A: This is a very good point. There are many countries that have done a better job at vaccination and other measures. But in terms of increasing the availability of vaccines global, US leadership is key. The US government actually owns or co-owns key patents in the mRNA vaccine process, and has the diplomatic and economic power to bring other countries to the table. And over and over I hear from colleagues in Africa, south Asia, Europe, that this is what's needed.
John Fawcett
01:21:25
Q: is this a discreet way of committing genocide in these lowest income countries? A: That's not the word I would choose, but it unquestionably a moral failure on a massive scale. More people will die of COVID after we have a vaccine than before. Unacceptable.
John Fawcett

Cindy's suggestion about slightly changing a basic letter is a GREAT idea for LTEs about housing UNaffordabiligy. I have statistics about shortages of affordable housing and the HIGH share of lowest income people for each congressional district in BA, and they could easily be done for every CD in the county.
