can you name any other historical examples where white people, or those in a position of privilege have acted as co-conspirators and abolitionists?
Dorothy, RESULTS (she/her)
27:57
One example that comes to mind is John Brown in the US. He was a white abolitionist in the 1800s who led a slave revolt and was executed.
Alicia Stromberg
28:04
John Brown!

As much progress as we think we make, there is evidence that nothing has changed. In Florida, there is now a law banning education and conversations which brings "discomfort" to white people in terms of discussing history. There is no means to make change without acceptance of the truth in our history.
Alicia Stromberg
36:54
it makes me think about how white folks strive be perceived as "good" rather than being an ally when it gets hard / willing to relinquish power
Carolyn Prouty
36:59
I can feel the questions rise up in me that help me deflect the impact of what is being asked for—how do I give up power? What does that look like? How much reparations are enough? To who? The questions put space between me and action. Action is being called for.
Virginia Vogts
37:24
This is uncomfortable. First we must recognize how we benefit from WS and then dismantle it- by refusing to support individuals, programs and institutions that embody it. Love what Winnie and Sister Soljah are teaching.

Yes, the system has set me into privileged opportunities. Knowing what to do personally to change this system upsets my sense of understanding what I can do.
Mary Kate O'Leary
40:12
I think about often, are white people including myself actually ready to give up power? Willing to step back and for example give up your job? Your “credit”? I think there are a lot of allies who say they support and/or ready to give up power, resources and privilege but what does that actually look like?
Kathleen Duncan

Change the contracts between western oil companies & low- & middle income countries, when drilling offshore, whether or not oil/natural gas is found, will arrange for permanently funded healthcare clinics (for a starter). A detailed outline including oversight. I don't want to hear about corruption - oil companies can find a way to work in coalition with long time non-profits with a strong history of success in working with the country.
Rwothomio Gabriel

In your own understanding, what does advocating for justice with people entail?

Is there a term you all use for non-white saviors? Specifically, poc who are not Black or Brown who participate and support white savior organizations? Are they still "white saviors?"

@Mirandy Defining & unpacking white saviorism-Defining white saviorism - A symptom of racism & white supremacy which places those in a position of privilege into the role of savior over those who have been historically oppressed and exploitedWhite Saviorism as an Ideology - It is important to note that while it is predominately white people perpetuating the white savior complex, BIPOC can also uphold the same harmful behavior. White saviorism, like white supremacy, operates on a reward / punishment system for non-white people. Those who align with whiteness are granted the illusion of protection and powe

In Haiti, anyone coming from the U.S. or other countries abroad on mission trips/travel/business/etc. regardless of their race, is called "blan" which is translated to white. It is an ideology
Alicia Stromberg

Would Candace Owens be a good example of someone who is Black, but they benefit from white supremacy by refusing to support all other Black and Brown communities. She gets many opportunities from white conservative organizations because she likes the nonsense that she says.White presenting Latinos also love the proximity they have to the white American population because they recognize the opportunities they have. I experience this in my Mexican/Indigenous family.
Mirandy (they/she)
56:40
Grace - imo, the only ethical monetary "aid" is no-strings-attached reparations. Loans are a form of neocolonialism. idk. thoughts?

I think rather than looking for other orgs that are WS we should be studying ourselves in RESULTS. I am so thrilled that we are having this forum.

One aspect is finally telling the truth about how white people / nations have and continue to keep countries like Uganda “underdeveloped”
Errolyn Gray
01:04:09
Perhaps the framing of the question is, this is what we are doing, this is what has been done. Let's join the movement and build on what has been done to move forward to where we need to be ?? Celebrating the work that we have accomplished but also bringing attention to the work that still needs to be done?
Kathleen Duncan

I like Dorothy's and Errol's suggestions. Thank you Mary Kate for bringing this up.

A follow-up question from Mary Kate O'Leary's question : how does the Global Fund to Fight AIDS TB Malaria serve as an example of advocacy with (rather than only for) the people that it serves ? ie. an example of the type of advocacy that we are discussing today ?

We have one more hand up with a question—perhaps the last question?
Errolyn Gray

Going back to the original observation that Results does not prominently feature the stories of the people/communities it/we are advocating with/for. We have similar problems finding constituents/those who benefit from the programs who have the time/interest to advocate with us. Any suggestions on how to solve this issue - top down and bottom up?
