Hello from San Diego! We've met with two of our five representatives so far.

I just saw the news on Twitter, the Senate passed the $1.9 Trillion COVID relief bill. Congrats everyone on your efforts to make it happen!

22:41
Wow! That’s a lot of meetings.

29:32
Hello everyone. From Viginia

30:06
Hi Andy, Stefani, Delores, Coumba, and everyone else too! SO glad to be here with you all today, from Raleigh, NC.

30:38

35:06
also exciting, $800M for homeless children and youth

35:22
BRAVO!

35:23
Great news, give people their dignity back and stopping exploitation. Thank you!

36:29

38:17
Great work, Senator Brown!

39:39
Amazing, Senator Brown! We had push back from NH that making the EITC and CTC, saying that it will be difficult to do so they don’t expire in 10 years. Is this a concern?

39:39
Deb Haalaalnnd’s constituents thank you!!

39:41
YAYYYY SENATOR WARNOCK!!! GA WOOOOOT!!!

40:08
Woot Woot!!

40:10
housing YES thanks Senator

40:55
Thank you Senator Brown!!!

42:00
Congrats to Senators Brown, Booker, Warnock and our own Colorado Senator Bennet! Yayyyy!!!! Bob and Barb Sample, Denver

42:10
In Housing, are you also going to address the extreme segregation around the country? Not simply putting more low income housing in segregated areas.

42:38
Lucinda - great Q! there is a rule for budget reconciliation (the Byrd rule) that prevents increasing the budget deficit for longer than a 10 year window. Making CTC/EITC expansion through another bill would get around this.

43:23
@Lucinda yes! This is extremely important. If we are concentrating those experiencing poverty in underserved neighborhoods they aren't getting their shot at the American Dream. They lack social capital and opportunity to improve their outcomes.

43:33
Sen. Brown, please consider public banks as a priority.

43:52
Congrats and welcome to Selena, the newest member of RESULTS Raleigh! It's her FIRST RESULTS webinar, as well.

44:04
Hi, Selena!

44:05
Welcome Selena!

44:21
@Ken, can you get a version the Q on the docket?

44:21
Welcome Selena!

44:50
We'll try, Lucinda.

46:12
Why is Joanne not one of Forbes' 50 over 50?

46:41
I mean, it has Dr. Fauci

47:14
Q. I'd love to hear what arguments leaders who champion anti-poverty initiatives like Sen. Brown hear against their causes. What data do they refer to? What "risks" do they cite as to why they can't support anti-poverty initiatives.

48:03
Good question Anuroop!

48:31
How can we make Housing Choice Vouchers part of mandatory spending instead of discretionary? Only 25% of eligible individuals and families receive vouchers.

49:44
WooWoo! Persistence usually pays off. We always persist to build that relationship and educate our Members of Congress. Well done RESULTS!

52:17
Why cant we build new housing to create structures that build equity and value?

53:10
Can Source of Income discrimination be stopped?

53:15
any thoughts on FSSHud program helps people own a home

53:32
@Joanne, is it worth circling back to an intention to integrate communities

53:49
YES! I am a public school teacher in a low income district and the easiest part of my job is teaching! I am counseling, a social worker and a psychologist all in one

54:05
Us teachers are doing it all right now and we need more support!!!

54:49
Thank you, Sen. Brown!!

55:09
Thank you Senator!!

55:11
Thank you, Sen. Brown!

55:42
LET'S DO IT! Let's make those tax credits PERMANENT and lift more families out of poverty.

55:45
Thank you, Senator

55:46
What a cll to action!!

55:58
will results pursue getting the housing vouchers mandatory?

56:05
Woo hoo, so moving!

56:21
So wonderful!! I’m ready to act now!

56:33
That was fabulous! Imagine what we can do!

56:36
Dang JoAnne just dropped it!!! WHAT! go head beast mode! that’s right!!!

57:45
Hope this isn’t a silly question, but is the appropriations process considered part of the budget process and therefore subject to reconciliation?

57:57
Carol, that has yet to be determined.

58:02
So exciting!! This is what i started working on poverty issues for in my youth! Equity! Social Justice! Housing! Child Poverty!

58:07
Roxanne, no, it is not.

58:44
Approps will be pursued in tandem with the recovery bill (the next recon. bill)

59:05
Tandem = parallel but separate process

59:16
WIll normal legal limit of U.S. contributions to Global Fund of one third of total apply to the $3.5 Billion in the Recovery Act? Or is there language exempting it?

59:25
How am I supposed to pay attention to comments in chat and listen to the presentation at the same time?

59:27
Let's do a shout out for Virginia and our RESULTS coordinator, Elizabeth Berry. We have had around 12 mtgs with our legislators over the last two weeks (only one outstanding). We pushed the appropriations line items in each mtg. Yay, Virginia!!

59:47
Great work VA!

01:00:47
Ann, the chat is available in the webinar recording so if you want to focus on the presentation now, you can read the chat later.

01:01:09
Great!

01:03:25
Why is GPE request $150 m. instead of $200 m. when we're asking for $1 billion GPE pledge from U.S. at upcoming Summer Replenishment?

01:03:50
In our lobby meetings, I’m getting the feeling that we need some solid talking points…maybe even a laser talk?…about why we’re trying to make that big leap to $1B for TB. Something that answers questions about what we’ll do with that money and why now. I have my own answers to that question, but it would be great if we had a slide of bullets or a formal laser talk on it. -Cindy

01:03:56
Roger, it will go up by $25 million each year.

01:04:11
so greater than $200 in the final two years

01:04:13
On Roger Hudson's question--the $3.5B for the global Fund is not subject to a 2:1 match from other countries as it is emergency funding and it can be used immediately.

01:04:23
thanks for the reminder to not stop lobbying, dorthy! We are still in the first 100 days! and have more priorities. yes!

01:04:26
U.S. Poverty question--How do economists measure the number of children who will be lifted out of poverty in the U.S., what metrics? Thanks!

01:04:55
Dorothy*

01:05:18
We have three brand new laser talks on all three appropriations requests!

01:05:30
yay laser talks!

01:05:43
https://results.org/resources/2021-global-poverty-laser-talk/

01:07:40
Thanks, Ken!

01:08:01
Thanks, Ken. That’s a good general one. I guess, I meant something that addresses specifically why such a big jump.

01:08:27
Is there a way to convert abandoned malls into affordable housing in the suburbs?

01:08:47
some cities are looking at reparations, especially around roperty/home ownership

01:08:55
property

01:09:06
Thank, you Cheryl!

01:09:44
can we make sure to ask for energy efficiency and keep a focus on sustainability like green new deal low income housing?

01:09:47
Great idea, lots of commercial buildings being abandoned now that Zoom is here. Convert them to housing!

01:09:51
We can look at that, Cindy. The leave behind does address it to some degree. We’ll see what we can do on the big jump in a laser talk as well.

01:09:58
Have we heard what the House Appropriations Committee's deadlines are for hearing from members? I realize that offices often set deadlines for constituents that are waaaaaay earlier, so we need to meet/make requests ASAP, and am wondering what the committee's timeframe is, if known.

01:09:59
Senator Cantwell (D-WA) is a big proponent of Housing Supply.

01:10:42
We don’t have SFOPS committee deadlines yet, Allison.

01:10:45
Are we looking at getting rid of apartment bans/exlusioinaryy zoning on the national scale?

01:10:49
As population grows commercial property can become schools, day care health clinics.

01:12:29
Cities can puechase the land an use separate corp to build low income housing allowing cities to rehab or build more housingon site if older building fails its structure.

01:12:42
A lot of housing issues reside at the local level. While there has been much success in elections at the federal and state levels, there needs to more focus on local elections.

01:13:16
Do these slides reflect the bill that just passed?

01:14:04
Thank you, Tom! That's so interesting!

01:15:20
@Ruth, here is the source for the data on the CTC cutting child poverty in half: https://www.povertycenter.columbia.edu/news-internal/2021/presidential-policy/biden-economic-relief-proposal-poverty-impact

01:15:54
AFA is . . .?

01:16:02
Senator Merkley offering a broad sweeping housing reform. See Aspen Institu8te's Strong Foundations: Housing Security. A good start to understand the problem. Emphasizes all jhousing is Local.

01:17:24
Thank you for sharing Dorothy!

01:17:48
I’m confused about what it means to make Housing Vouchers Universal. Universal?

01:18:19
Are there appropriations for domestic priorities too? Or just global asks?

01:18:21
Thanks Dorothy and for sending the slide deck yesterday!!

01:18:22
Make them available to all who need them, Craig

01:18:42
only 1 in 4 who need them have access to them at this point

01:18:53
Congrats to RESULTS for combining the global and domestic calls. This is great! Bob Sample, Denver

01:19:11
yea!!

01:19:11
@Jan we only have global appropriations asks for FY22!

01:19:11
agreed, Bob!!

01:23:02
That is to say, Section 8 vouchers are not an "entitlement." They are available til amount of funding appropriated runs out. Change sought would be to guarantee assistance to everyone eligible who applies, including the 75% on a waiting list.

01:23:30
Yay! I see Selena, our newest group member in Raleigh. She's already plugged in and so sweet!

01:23:48

Michaela is also a Fellow!

01:27:09
Yeah Timea!

01:27:11
so glad to have you Timea! welcome to the family!

01:27:40
Roger, you are right. We want to make HCVs universal so everyone eligible can get a voucher. Right now, focus is on getting the program fully funded each year. Making it a mandatory program would be ideal then funding would be guaranteed each year, but that is also much heavier lift in Congress. We'll have to see how negotiations play out the next few months.

01:27:45
Valory!!!

01:27:51
Exciting to hear about your experiences so far, Timea!:)

01:28:01
Thanks all <3

01:28:06
two new advocates both spoke for the first time in a meeting with one of our representatives!!!

01:28:09
We were expecting to meet with Representative Adam Smith's staff members but he decided he wanted to be there himself!

01:28:13
When Liz Cheney said she would talk with Rep. McCaul and the other Foreign Affairs Republicans about hunger and nutrition.

01:28:25
Cool Karen. Hes’ awesome

01:28:45
Great to hear that Ann!!

01:28:46
I participated for the first time -- it went well -- I did not have a big role because I had no idea how it would work. Our group is so knowledgeable and so it went well -- I need to keep learning and then taking chances!

01:28:54
It was exciting to meet new members of Rep. Val Demings staff!

01:28:59
Yes Cecilia! That was so cool.!

01:29:04
yeah @michele!!!

01:29:08
Our Congressional staffer described the steps of security she had to transit en route to work. Wow, I felt sad to think she had to go through all that. At same time, glad the procedure is keeping safety a priority.

01:29:14
@david :)))))))))

01:31:31
Aide to Rep Weber (TX-14-R) said it would be no problem for his boss (Weber) to speak with Rep. Michael McCaul, that they had become friends when they both served on Foreign Affairs (McCaul is still on FA).

01:31:46
Our Seattle group had a scheduled meeting with the staff of Congressman Adam Smith, and he surprised us by being present for the full meeting ! He also described the Global Partnership for Education as an "incredibly successful program" … great meeting !

01:31:53
Thanks for that Bruce!

01:32:00
love it, Bruce!!!

01:32:07
Great share! Thanks for brining new advocates on board!

01:32:21
All 10 of our new members have spoken up at our NJ/PA Congressional meetings!
