Hi all, joining in from Zambia kist listening in.
Lindsay K. Saunders - Raleigh NC
56:19
I love the end of year columns about progress, but also how both Nick and RESULTS continues to point out progress to demonstrate success.....as evidence thtat what we're doing is tranforming lives. Keep speaking out to transform lives. Even partners abroad. Musole is in Zambia joining us! :)
Gail Dolson
01:00:27
what would you say it the best way to bring attention to the fact that there are 15,000 children dying everyday. we see in the media is the death rate from this pandemic and how many people are ill but hardly anything about what is happening in the developing world
Susan Christie
01:02:55
I have Facebook friends in Africa (Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya) and they are keeping me updated about what is happening to them. They believe the pandemic is more serious in the United States and that we are less able to cope with it.
Ken Patterson
01:04:53
There will be an opportunity for questions. You can put them here and we’ll pick as many as we can.
Sarah Thomas
01:06:53
Is the work done in Africa support communities in combating the virus? Will government’s be stepping up to support those most vulnerable?
Sarah Thomas
01:07:28
Africa’s response to AIDS
Dustin E
01:09:52
If I remember correctly, the Interstate was a military endeavor
Gail Dolson
01:11:46
From Gail Dolson- with this pandemic what is obvious is that homeless folks cannot manage to do what is necessary to prevent spread - how can we bring attention to this to make some speedy decisions to get these folks into homes and get some healthcare
Ken Patterson
01:11:52
Put questions here if you have them.
LWYBORNY
01:11:57
How close are we to the point that the world accepts or commits to ending the most severe poverty forever?
Jamy Rentschler
01:12:41
Question for Mr. Kristof: How can we begin to change the "boot strap" narrative regarding poverty in the U.S.?
Paul & Beth Wilson
01:13:22
What should the U.S. do right now to reduce the coming agony of the pandemic in the global south?
Chadia Mugisha
01:14:25
Recently, a French doctor called the scientific community to test new COVID-19 vaccines on Africans because they are “less equipped” to deal with the pandemic. How do we make sure that advocating for funding health efforts in the Global South at this time doesn’t turn into a call to use people as lab rats?
Meredith Dodson
01:14:42
Gail, in case Nick Kristof doesn't get to your other question, we've been trying hard to get attention on the intersection of housing issues/homelessness and public health. More with actions: https://results.org/blog/latest-from-capitol-hill-on-coronavirus-and-poverty/
Hiba Fatima
01:15:02
Great point, Chadia
Diana Tyree Eddy
01:15:15
Tax issues are soo boring...However we at RESULTS’s are pushing for renters tax credits especially now that housing is healthcare in a pandemic. Will you please consider taking up educating the public about renters tax creditts
Chadia Mugisha
01:15:23
Hi Hiba :)
Adam Wasserman
01:15:38
Not surprisingly, authoritarian leaders are trying to use the pandemic to strengthen themselves and weaken democracies. Is it your sense so far that this crisis is strengthening or weakening authoritarian tendencies around the world?
Michael Gordon
01:16:04
With all the differences in federal, states, and local responses to Covid … what it the best “level” for citizens to try to make a difference?
Ken Patterson
01:16:21
From Faith Frank: So the past days we have seen a suggestion on the media for the Corona vaccine to be tested in Africa. What do you think of this suggestion given that, Africa has way more less cases as compared to other countries?
Dustin E
01:17:01
As a user of the VA health system. I am against a UHCS. Only because if the VA takes 12 months to diagnose and treat an issue that should take less than one in private, I feel an American UHCS would exaggerate this even further. What about making private more affordable by killing practices like excessive patent renewals, or having the cost be known before the treatments? Things of that nature.
saraflaten
01:18:39
As a point o interest, I’ve read that this narrative came over from England with the first settlers as an expression of Protestantism: the poor are poor because in some way they are “bad”.
Lynne
01:19:56
I have noticed that as the world moves toward successfully meeting the SDG’s, the USA may be shamed into focusing on our own economic and health injustices…. which our in country often worse than poverty and injustice than in other countries?

Dustin E
01:21:58
If someone doesn't come out of this self-quarantine with a skill, improvement (like an exercise plan), or side hustle then they didn't lack time, they lacked discipline.
Lynne
01:22:29
Oops… How will success in approaching the SDG’s affect USA failures in meeting those goals?
John Hornby
01:22:40
Dustin E: you seem to be making unsupported assertions: RE: Interstate was a civilian endeavor, funded by Congress through the Fuel Tax. Military didn’t build it. VA and Universal Health Care are totally unrelated. Medicare works great.
RESULTS Fort Worth
01:23:34
Question: In Tightrope you wrote about the a downtown in the auto industry and the different response to those large lay offs in Windsor, Ontario and Detroit. The workers in Windsor had much better outcomes than those in Detroit. What policies could we borrow from Windsor’s response that would help us recover from our current economic crisis?
Dustin E
01:24:07
Again why not focus on bringing down the cost of healthcare?
Dustin E
01:24:33
rather than giving money to those who can't afford the current price?
Grace O'Donnell
01:24:37
military provided input as to which roads were critical for national security. I agree VA is terrifying as a model for single payer. and it's natural to make that connection. One of the best things we can do to bring down costs though is to remove the corporate dividends and overhead, including exec salaries
Dustin E
01:25:27
I like Grace's thinking
John Fawcett

Gail Dolson
01:27:40
From Gail Dolson- some of our Bay area Results members who are landlords are concerned that renters tax credits will raise the rents for everyone if low cost housing is not erected ASAP- can you respond to this - Gail Dolson

Lindsay K. Saunders - Raleigh NC
01:28:21
Question: What does Nick see about the RESULTS model for advocacy and organizational effectiveness that makes it work so well? What has he seen work and not work as well with other advocacy groups?
Cynthia Tschampl
01:28:54
Philanthropists are not accountable to the public.

Dvorah Cristol
01:30:50
To address the elephant in the room - how do we deal with the dangerous incompetence of Trump and his administration? Thank you and I greatly admire your work!
Chris Herndon
01:30:52
Philanthropy needs to move upstream by more actively advocating for policy that reduces the downstream issues their organizations address.
Dvorah Cristol

What should the “new normal” look like if you were in charge of setting policies?

Meredith Dodson
01:32:33
Back to Gail's question, I think the concern is that by enacting a renters' tax credit (which would help low-income renters so they can afford housing), it would raise housing costs. As Nick Kristof noted, needs to be coupled with building lots more affordable housing.
Gail Dolson
01:33:32
HI Lori and Dvorah- yes we need to address the elephant in the room- one way is media attention- as much as possible - and of course reaching out to our elected officials -Gail Dolsoln
Lynne
01:33:40
I see that the US public never understood the value of government and underlying policies, and that led to voters NOT AWARE that hollowing out expertise and systems (like the State Department) could have devastating effects?

How do we get partisan, camps out of their media bubbles?

What about while building more affordable housing, we advocate for steps to be taken against artificial housing shortages. Stop companies from buying up all the houses that they never intend to live in

Hi Jim - yes the Righteous mind - is a book worth reading - I have a sister who is a conservative republican who told me that Donald Trump is one of the best President we ever had - and if I was not reading this book I would not have been able to even listen to her without getting “pissed off “

Single parents are really strapped right now with the logistics to get groceries on snap without exposing themselves or their kids to covid 19. As we look at snap response to covid, do you see a way to help single parents access groceries safely?
